How to use it

How to set up your MTB suspension

Pump to the starting pressure

Set the fork to the pressure above, and the shock to roughly your body weight in psi. Bounce a few times to equalize the air spring, then settle into your riding stance.

Measure and dial in sag

Push the O-ring to the seal, sit static in riding position, step off, and read the travel used. Adjust pressure until you hit the sag target. Pressure is the start; sag is the truth.

Set rebound, then ride

Set rebound from the guidance above, then ride. How the bike feels over roots, in corners, and off drops tells you what to change next.

What’s inside

Built on published charts, not a formula

Every fork pressure here is transcribed from the maker’s own setup chart: Fox, RockShox, Öhlins, Marzocchi, Manitou, Cane Creek. Forks that run a dual air chamber, like the Öhlins ramp-up or Manitou IRT, show both pressures. Rear shocks work the way manufacturers actually prescribe. No brand publishes a weight-to-pressure shock chart, because the frame’s leverage ratio changes it bike to bike, so you pick your shock for its real sag target, max pressure, and token capacity, then start near body weight in psi and set sag. If your exact model isn’t listed, the generic option still gets you close, and the Suspend app carries data for many more units.

Where do these air pressure numbers come from?

Each one is transcribed from the fork maker’s own published chart: Fox owner’s manuals, RockShox spec sheets, and the Öhlins, Marzocchi, Manitou, and Cane Creek setup guides. Pick your fork and the calculator shows that model’s real starting pressure for your weight, with the source noted under the result. It is not a generic weight formula.

Why do I have to pick my exact fork model?

Because a Fox 36, a RockShox Lyrik, and an Öhlins RXF36 all want different pressures at the same rider weight, sometimes by 20 psi or more. A single formula that ignored the model would be wrong for most people. Picking the model is what makes the number trustworthy.

What sag should I run?

For most trail riding, aim for 15–20% sag on the fork and 27–30% on the shock. Cross-country runs a touch firmer, downhill a touch deeper. Sag is how far the suspension settles under your static riding weight, as a percentage of total travel. Set the pressure, then confirm sag by measuring.

Why doesn’t it give a shock pressure for my exact shock?

No manufacturer publishes a weight-to-pressure chart for rear shocks, because the frame’s leverage ratio changes the pressure bike to bike. Even RockShox and Fox tell you to start near your body weight in psi and then set sag by measurement. That’s the method the calculator gives you.

Does riding weight include my gear?

Yes. Use your kitted weight: you plus helmet, shoes, pack, and water. The manufacturer charts are built around fully dressed riding weight.

Will this get me a perfect setup?

It gets you a trustworthy starting point, which is the hard part of a blank setup. The feel comes from riding and adjusting: harsh over roots, wallowing in turns, blowing through travel.
