RockShox Recon setup

A Recon is simple on purpose: one air pressure, one rebound dial, one lockout lever. Put in your weight for RockShox’s own starting pressure.

Rebound, spacers and limits
  • Compression: Lever on Open to start. Lock is for climbs and smooth road.
  • Rebound: RockShox doesn’t print a rebound click number in its manual or on the spec sheet. Its recommended starting setting is in the free RockShox TrailHead app (trailhead.rockshox.com, needs a login). Without it, fully open the dial and close it a few clicks at a time until the fork stops pogoing back after a hard push.
  • Volume spacers at 120 mm: ships with 0, max 2.
  • E-bikes add 10 psi. 130–150 mm forks can go to 225 psi.

Fix what you feel

Tap what your fork does. Fixes are for your Motion Control RL. Change one thing at a time, then ride the same section again.

Harsh over roots and braking bumps

Too much air, or rebound too slow.

  1. Make sure the lockout lever is on Open. Lock is for climbs and smooth road.
  2. Take out 3–5 psi and ride it again.
  3. Rebound dial a couple of clicks counter-clockwise if the fork feels like it’s stuck low.

Dives under braking and on steep roll-ins

Not enough air for your weight.

  1. Add 3–5 psi.
  2. This fork has no compression dial, so air pressure is your main fix.

Bottoms out hard on drops and big landings

The air spring runs out of support at the end of the travel.

  1. Add one Bottomless Token. Stay within the maximum for your travel.
  2. Still bottoming? Add 3–5 psi.

Never uses full travel, even on big hits

Too much air, or too many tokens.

  1. RockShox says the fork should reach full travel at the right pressure. Take out 3–5 psi.
  2. If you added tokens, take one out.

Bouncy, or clunks at full extension

Rebound is too fast.

  1. Turn the rebound dial 1–2 clicks clockwise.

Rides lower and lower through rough sections

Rebound is too slow, so the fork packs down.

  1. Turn the rebound dial 2 clicks counter-clockwise.

RockShox Recon rebound setting

RockShox doesn’t print a rebound click number in its manual or on the spec sheet. Its recommended starting setting is in the free RockShox TrailHead app (trailhead.rockshox.com, needs a login). Without it, fully open the dial and close it a few clicks at a time until the fork stops pogoing back after a hard push. Turn the rebound dial clockwise for slower rebound, counter-clockwise for faster. Counter-clockwise until it stops is fully open. Push the fork down hard and let go. If the wheel pogos back up, rebound is too fast. If the fork stays low and doesn’t come back for the next bump, it’s too slow.

These are Bottomless Tokens. They change how hard the fork ramps up at the end of its travel, not its sag. Add one if you bottom out, remove one if you never reach full travel.

Which RockShox Recon damper do I have?

  • Motion Control RL: A lockout lever with Open and Lock, plus one rebound adjuster. No compression dial.

The Recon Gold RL has the Motion Control RL damper: rebound and a lockout lever only.

RockShox Recon service interval

RockShox says to clean and check air pressure every ride, do a lower leg service every 50 hours, and a full lower leg, damper and spring service every 200 hours.

Questions

What air pressure should I run in my RockShox Recon?

Start from RockShox’s chart for your riding weight with gear. On 100–120 mm, a 170–180 lb rider is in the 160–180 lb row: 85–100 psi (130–150 mm forks use 75–90 psi). Max is 205 psi on 100–120 mm and 225 psi on 130–150 mm. Then check sag.

How much sag should a RockShox Recon have?

RockShox’s manual says 10–20% suits shorter-travel bikes and 20–30% longer-travel ones. For a trail Recon, 15–20% is a good target: 18–24 mm on a 120 mm fork. Set the rebound dial fully open first, then measure dressed to ride. More air means less sag.

How many clicks of rebound on a RockShox Recon?

RockShox doesn’t publish a click count. Its starting setting for your weight is in the TrailHead app. Clockwise is slower, counter-clockwise is faster. If the wheel pogos back up after a hard push, close it a couple of clicks. If the fork stays low, open it.

Does this work for my older Recon?

Only for the Recon Gold RL from 2024 on. The Recon Silver (Solo Air) and older Recons have their own rows in their year’s spec sheet at sram.com/service.

Starting points from the manufacturer’s charts, not a substitute for your fork’s manual. Always confirm with a sag measurement and stay under the max pressure.
