Marzocchi Bomber Z1 setup

Most Bomber Z1s leave the shop set for someone else. Put in your weight for your starting numbers, straight from Marzocchi’s own charts.

Compression, spacers and limits
  • Compression: Lever fully OPEN to start. It sweeps between OPEN and FIRM with no clicks.
  • Rebound: Turn the dial fully clockwise until it stops, then count the clicks back out. The dial is under the damper-side leg.
  • Volume spacers at 160 mm: ships with 2, max 7.
  • Max pressure 120 psi.

Fix what you feel

Tap what your fork does. Fixes are for your RAIL. Change one thing at a time, then ride the same section again.

Harsh over roots and braking bumps

Too much air, or the compression lever is too far toward FIRM.

  1. Check sag first. Under 15% means too much air.
  2. Make sure the compression lever is fully OPEN.
  3. Rebound too slow can feel harsh too. Open it 1 or 2 clicks (counter-clockwise).

Dives under braking and on steep roll-ins

Too little compression support, or too much sag.

  1. Move the compression lever a small step toward FIRM, about a quarter of the way. It has no clicks.
  2. Still diving and sag is past 20%? Add 3 to 5 psi.

Bottoms out hard on drops and big landings

The air spring isn’t ramping up enough.

  1. Add one volume spacer.
  2. Stay within Marzocchi’s max spacer count for your travel.
  3. The lever only firms up the start of the stroke, so it won’t fix a hard bottom-out.

Never uses full travel, even on big hits

Too many spacers, or too much air.

  1. If sag is right, remove one volume spacer.
  2. Make sure the compression lever is fully OPEN.

Bouncy, or clunks at full extension

Rebound is too fast.

  1. Add rebound 1 or 2 clicks (clockwise).

Rides lower and lower through rough sections

Rebound is too slow, so the fork packs down.

  1. Open rebound 2 clicks (counter-clockwise).

Full Marzocchi Bomber Z1 reference

For the air-sprung Bomber Z1, 2019 onward. The 2024-and-newer redesign has the RAIL damper, and the 2019 to 2023 fork has GRIP. Marzocchi’s pressure, rebound and spacer numbers are identical for both. The coil Z1 uses spring rates, not pressure, so this page does not apply to it. The newer Bomber Z (150 to 190 mm, 3-position lever) and the Super Z have their own charts.

Turn the dial fully clockwise until it stops, then count the clicks back out. The dial is under the damper-side leg. Push the fork down hard and let go. If it clunks at full extension, rebound is too fast.

Spacers change how hard the fork ramps up at the end of its travel, not its sag. Add one if you bottom out too easily, remove one if you never get near full travel. Never go over Marzocchi’s max for your travel.

Which Marzocchi Bomber Z1 damper do I have?

  • RAIL: One compression lever that sweeps between OPEN and FIRM with no clicks, plus a rebound dial under the damper-side leg.
  • GRIP: The same sweep lever and rebound dial as RAIL. On the 2019 to 2023 forks the lever is labelled GRIP.

The redesigned 2024-and-newer Z1 (36 mm chassis) ships with RAIL. The earlier 2019 to 2023 Z1 has GRIP.

Marzocchi Bomber Z1 service interval

Marzocchi recommends a full service every 125 hours of riding or once a year, whichever comes first.

Questions

What air pressure should I run in my Marzocchi Bomber Z1?

Start from Marzocchi’s chart for your riding weight with gear. A 170–180 lb rider starts at 76 psi. Then set sag to 15–20%. Never go over 120 psi, and never below 40.

How much sag should a Bomber Z1 have?

15–20% of travel: 24–32 mm on a 160 mm fork. Measure with the compression lever fully OPEN, dressed to ride, with your weight spread across saddle, bars and pedals.

How many clicks of rebound on a Bomber Z1?

It depends on your weight. From fully closed, a 170–180 lb rider starts at 8 clicks out. Lighter riders run more clicks out: 13 at 120–130 lb, down to 1 at 240–250 lb.

Does this work for my older Bomber Z1?

For the air Z1 from 2019 on, yes. Marzocchi’s numbers are the same for the GRIP and RAIL dampers. The coil Z1 sets up by spring rate instead, and the newer Bomber Z and Super Z have their own charts.
